AN Oxford City councillor has been shortlisted for a national award.

Chris Jarvis, leader of the Green Party group, has been shortlisted for the ‘Young Councillor of the Year’ award as part of the Local Government Information Unit’s Annual Councillor Awards.

The award recognises councillors under the age of 30 who have demonstrated a commitment to working for the community using council structures and have contributed to or delivered key council projects which benefit residents.

Mr Jarvis said he is honoured to be shortlisted.

"Over the last year, green councillors have made a massive difference to people in our city,” he said.

“We've pushed the council to be trans inclusive - rolling out training for councillors and officers and improving the support we provide to the LGBTIQA+ community.

“We've got a commitment from the Council to roll out free period products across public buildings and public toilets.

“And we've ensured that the council's policies on climate and the environment are subjected to thorough, cross-party scrutiny.

"I'm incredibly proud to lead the green group of councillors that has delivered this. And I'm proud that this has been recognised in Oxford and beyond."

Councillor Lucy Pegg, deputy leader of the Green group, added: "It’s testament to his hard work and commitment to working with residents to make St Mary's - and Oxford - a fairer and greener place to live."
