THE trial of a 47-year-old man, accused of committing offences linked to an animal rights campaign against Oxford University, begins on Monday, June 2.

Mel Broughton, of Semilong Road, Northampton, was arrested in December 2007 by detectives investigating a fire at The Queen's College sports pavilion in November 2006 and the discovery of improvised explosive devices at Templeton College in February 2007.

The Crown Prosecution Service authorised that Broughton be charged with two counts of possessing or controlling explosives with intent to endanger life or injure property and two counts of having an article with intent to destroy or damage property.

The trial, at Oxford Crown Court, is listed for two weeks.
