A major road in Oxford will be closed for just under two weeks as the county council undertakes work to implement the Quickways scheme.

Marston Road will be shut to motorists from today (September 20) to October 2 between 7.30pm and 5.30am, so that Quickways cycle routes can be installed.

The measures to improve cycling and walking across the city - collectively known as Quickways - were approved by the cabinet member for highways management on January 27 2022, following a consultation throughout 2021.

Quickways are cycle routes linking key destinations via main routes into the city centre. They are designed to provide a direct faster route into the centre and are generally used by more confident cyclists.

The quickways proposals have been developed from the Oxfordshire Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP).

The scheme will see 20mph speed limits, improved pedestrian crossings and new mandatory segregated cycle lanes marked by either road markings or plastic bollards called orcas and wands, amongst many other measures.

As part of Oxfordshire County Council’s work to implement the scheme, Marston Road will be shut on the follow days, for the following reasons:

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson said: "As a part of our programme of works to install Quickways cycle paths, Marston Road will be closed overnight on 20 and 21 September from 7.30pm to 5.30am for resurfacing and lining work. During this time through-traffic will be diverted via Headley Way and Headington Road.

"Sections of Marston Road will also be closed overnight between 22 - 23 September and 26 September – 01 October with a diversion in place for motorists via Old Marston Road/Oxford Road and Cherwell Drive. These closures will allow the contractors to carry out patching, resurfacing, lining and other related work.

"Residents will still be able to access their homes throughout the work and traffic management staff will be on site to advise road users.

"Addresses on Marston Road and adjoining roads have received letters detailing works, and we are issuing regular online posts to help keep people up to date on our highways projects. More details on the Quickways are available on our website: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/roads-and-transport/active-travel/oxford-city-quickways."
