The Queen visited Oxfordshire many times over the years and was greeted by adoring crowds wherever she went.

One of her memorable visits was to the Ashmolean Museum in 2009, following the Beaumont Street attraction’s £61m refurbishment.

Thousands of people had already visited the revamped museum before the Queen arrived for the official opening.

There were 22,000 visitors in the first weekend after the museum opened and 70,000 visitors within the first 10 days.

Dr Christopher Brown, director of the Ashmolean, said before the Royal visit: “We are looking forward to showing Her Majesty the new galleries and introducing her to our supporters who have made this remarkable redevelopment possible, and to the staff, contractors, designers and architects who have helped to build the new museum.

“Her Majesty’s visit is a great honour for us and a historical moment for Oxford. ”

Following her visit to the Ashmolean, the Queen arrived at Oxford University’s Brasenose College, which was celebrating its 500th anniversary.

She was a guest of the college for lunch, then visited the college chapel, before unveiling a plaque to mark her visit.
