A man has been detained by mental health authorities after he was pulled from a burning car in Oxford today.

The man, who has not been named, was in a red R reg Volvo estate, when he set fire to the vehicle at 6.45am near the junction of Abingdon Road and Lincoln Road, said police spokesman Claire Gourlay.

A passer-by saw what was happening and pulled the man clear of the burning vehicle.

Miss Gourlay said the man was not seriously injured and was detained under the Mental Health Act.

Lincoln Road, and Abingdon Road between Thames Street and Weirs Lane, were cordoned off while officers dealt with the incident but traffic restrictions were lifted by 7am.

Miss Gourlay added: "The person who was arrested had set fire to his car with himself in it.

"Thanks to the actions of the passer-by the man was not seriously hurt.

"He was fine - there were no serious injuries - and he is now being detained under the Mental Health Act. The car needed to be towed away.

"The area around the incident was cordoned off for the safety for the public as a precaution."
