I whoeheartedly agree with Lisa McCann (Oxford Mail, March 26) - what a fabulous week without traffic lights at Littlemore roundabout.

I travel around Oxford all hours of the day - l have to for work - constantly sitting in queues at many roundabouts, looking at pretty fairy lights that are clearly not necessary when there isn't a vehicle in sight.

All the time the lights were out at Littlemore, traffic flowed freely, no accidents were reported - in fact, there are more accidents when the lights are in action - and no long queues even in the rush hour.

People remembered the Highway Code to give way at roundabouts - a system that has worked well for many years without lights.

Lights do nothing for the environment, with vehicles sitting there belching out tons of carbon, waiting for the pretty green one to sparkle.

Then, with foot to the floor, they race away on to the clear road ahead, adding extra emissions and burning more fuel.

It is the same story when the lights are out at Cowley Retail Park, Hinksey Hill and Redbridge roundabouts - there are never any holdups. Traffic runs better than ever, there are fewer accidents as drivers are less stressed and people get on with their daily lives with ease.

We should try to create a cleaner city by turning off, or better still, doing away with unnecessary traffic lights.

This would save electricity and maintenance costs, create cleaner air because traffic would be constantly flowing - and there would be moderately happier, stress-free motorists.
