Sir - In your edition dated March 28, Gerry Jackson, of Critchleys, answered questions relating to the recent budget.
He informed readers that due to the abolishment of the ten per cent tax band one would have to be earning £36,000 a year before the savings in basic rate tax make up for the loss of the ten per cent band. I find it difficult to believe this statement. By my, admittedly amateur, calculations anyone with taxable earnings (that is after deducting your personal allowances) of about £13,440 will be better off.
By the time your taxable earnings approach £36,000 you will be paying £450 less income tax.
