Sir - Your readers may think that, with the 'consultation' date for post office closures past, with the Parliamentary vote to allow the post office closures past, the matter is complete. It is not.

Many of our Members of Parliament opposed the proposals for Oxford and Oxfordshire. Write urging them to keep up their opposition. Most local councillors oppose planned closures - and many of them are coming up for election on May 1. Ask then if they plan to oppose closures - and use your vote accordingly.

You can appeal against the closure proposals yourself to Postwatch (the consumer watchdog for post offices) Write to Network Project Team, Postwatch at FREEPOST, POSTWATCH or e-mail infor@postwatch.co.uk Be aware that the closure programme for Oxfordshire is deeply flawed. As Maureen Hadfield said in her letter to you (March 21) - for non-post office reasons - Oxford north of St Giles lost five post offices in the two years preceding the proposals - not because of post office action, but because the shops hosting them went out of business.

Thus Summertown already was well below the Post Office's required standard of post office provision in urban areas.

Unfortunately the consultation team did not take this fact in!

Thus a large area of Oxford falls below the Post Office's own service requirement: "95 per cent of the total urban population ... to be within one mile of their nearest post office branch".

In North Oxford, this standard of service is nowhere near being met. Maureen Hadfield's suggestion that Oxford council consider opening a post office in Ferry Centre beside the main car park is a serious proposal that would meet Post Office approval. We can all ensure that council candidates commit themselves to this project.
