In response to your article about East Oxford Community Social Club, Group ordered out due to cannabis (Oxford Mail, March 26), we know that many of our members use the drug - we do have reggae nights after all.

But we believe most of them have the good sense not to bring it into the club.

Before last year, when I became club treasurer, people used to smoke cannabis openly in the bar, and the previous police regime tolerated this.

We introduced badged security, then came the smoking ban, so those days are gone forever.

Perhaps the police do think we have a liberal stance on cannabis, but we don't know because they won't talk to us.

We heard second-hand that they arrested "someone" for having cannabis at the club on February and let the person off with a caution.

This could happen on any licensed premises, and short of strip searches on the door, how can we be sure no-one is carrying drugs when they know they will be let off if arrested?

On February 27, police had a meeting with the East Oxford Community Association to which we weren't invited, and said they intended to take our alcohol licence to review.

The association knew so little that it surrendered our licence on the spot, thinking this was in its power. When it realised it wasn't, it used the power it has over us and gave us notice.

However, club members are also members of the association, so we have requested a special meeting of the association to try to overrule the eviction.
