An Oxford nightclub which had its licence suspended over drink-related problems is considering appealing and has promised it is business as usual this weekend.

The Imperial, in Park End Street, had its premises licence suspended for six weeks by the city council on Tuesday.

But the club can stay open until Wednesday, April 9, which is also the deadline for the venue's to appeal against the order. Manager Philip Glenn said last night he planned to make a decision on whether to appeal by Monday.

He added: "The club is open this weekend and it will very much be business as usual."

The nightclub is hosting a drum and bass event tomorrow, a regular Friday club night, a 107.9 Jack FM promotion event on Saturday, then a private one-off event on Easter Sunday.

The council's licensing committee imposed the six-week suspension after hearing police evidence.

Officers compiled a dossier of disorder at the club, including toilets testing positive for drugs and a mass brawl. They blamed a series of disturbances on cheap drinks promotions.

If the venue appeals before April 9, the suspension will be postponed until a hearing at a magistrates' court takes place.
