Sir - May I through your columns thank everyone involved for their magnificent efforts last weekend in support of OxClean Spring Clean 2008?

That some 1,500 volunteers should have turned out in the wet to brighten up the city emphasises how strongly the citizens of Oxford care about the look of their home town, and the impression it gives to our visitors. None of this would have been possible without the outstanding response of everyone in the council's City Works department, whose enthusiasm and dedicated support throughout the weekend established new levels of understanding and cooperation with all those involved. We feel that all this really has made a difference to how the city looks and feels. How then do we keep it this way?

We shall be studying with City Works the lessons learned thus far, and OxClean will be back with further recommendations. In the mean time let us hope that those who generate or contribute to the problems of litter might begin to modify their inconsiderate habits. Finally, sir, may I thank you for all that The Oxford Times has done in supporting and promoting our joint vision for a litter-free Oxford.
