MORE than 40 young women have now put their names forward to take part in this year's Miss Oxford competition.

The contenders are being invited to a photo audition next Tuesday.

The winner could become Miss England and compete in Miss World, following in the footsteps of the current Miss England, Georgia Horsley. Eleanor Glynn, from Sandford-on-Thames, was crowned Miss Oxford in 2006, and went on to win Miss England. Daniella Luan achieved the same feat in 2002.

Both women travelled across the globe to compete in the Miss World competition and Miss England organiser Angie Beasley said the Oxfordshire area often provided a high number of entries.

Ms Beasley said: "We have had a good selection of entries from across Oxfordshire and quite a few came in at the last minute.

"Girls are now getting ready for the photo auditions, which shouldn't take more than about ten to 15 minutes for each contestant.

"One girl phoned up to say she was going to cycle down to the audition and was worried that her hair would get blown about if it was a windy day.

"If there are any girls who have missed the deadline and still want to enter then they should give me a call, and we might be able to squeeze them in.

"Georgia is having such a great time being Miss England that she doesn't want to give up her crown, but she will have to eventually."

Following the photoshoot, about 20 finalists will be selected for the final round of the competition.

The ultimate winner of Miss Oxford will win a place in the Miss England grand final on July 18 - and receive a prize package worth more than £2,000, which includes a two-day stay in London for the Miss England final, a day at a Champneys health resort, a photoshoot and portfolio from the Fresh Academy, and an evening gown worth £500.

Organisers are also looking for firms to support the competition by offering the 20 finalists and winner of the Miss Oxford contest more prizes.
