A Manchester Terrier returned to Crufts months after he was almost savaged to death by another animal.

Uno defied the odds to perform at the world-renowned dog show at the weekend, despite severe scarring to his hind quarters following the attack in October.

The successful show dog was left with multiple injuries and a two-inch scar after the bigger dog attacked him while owner George Hodac was walking him near his home in Stanway Road, Risinghurst, Oxford.

Mr Hodac, 60, said: "We were approaching another dog when it jumped out of a front garden and attacked us.

"It happened very quickly but I managed to lift my dog a little bit so it got him by his backside. Otherwise he would have died. It was such a brutal attack. I was struggling with the dog on the pavement. In the end three men were struggling with him on the ground. Finally they brought a bucket of water from the house which helped."

Uno needed two operations after the attack, which left Mr Hodac and his partner Ludka Britanakova with a bill of nearly £500.

Mr Hodac said: "All the people from the Manchester Terrier Club were absolutely shocked.

"People simply did not believe he would be able to return to the ring because his injuries were so bad. I still think it is amazing he managed to."

Uno did not win at Crufts, but he has finished second and third in his class at other recent top dog shows.

Miss Britanakova said: "He has all the standards a show dog should have of his breed.

"He is the perfect size, has all the perfect markings and he is cheeky on top of it."
