I was delighted to read that mums of Rose Hill Primary School in Oxford had won their battle to stop only halal meat being served for school dinners (Oxford Mail, February 20).

Some of the letters you printed about the issue were quite shocking. One reader argued that giving all children halal meat was no different from changing brands of fish fingers.

Another stated that in the times of Jesus, animals were killed in the same way halal meat is slaughtered today, so surely it is acceptable for all?

Both these arguments for such slaughter are very weak.

For a start, it wouldn't be acceptable for Muslim children to eat meat from animals slaughtered in standard British slaughterhouses, so why should children of Christian or Catholic backgrounds be expected to eat meat from animals killed in the Muslim way, with no form of stunning?

As for the lady who put forward the 'Jesus argument', I would hope that since Jesus lived 2,000 years ago, there has been some progress made in terms of animal welfare.

As a Christian, I think that Jesus, compassionate as He was, would be happy for animals to be slaughtered with stunning to try and ease their pain and suffering.

We can follow whatever religions we choose, but people in positions of power, such as headteachers, need to tread carefully and think things through before making decisions that could upset people.

I hope no other schools in Oxford are doing the same as Rose Hill.
