The £5 petrol gallon has arrived on UK motorways with the M40 Cherwell Valley Service Area charging £1.10 a litre for petrol and £1.16 a litre for diesel.

A gallon is 4.5 5litres. Nationally, petrol prices have risen to yet a new record high of £1.06 and £1.12 for diesel, the AA said.

At the same time last year, the figures were 89p and 92p respectively. It now costs an average of £8.59 more to fill up a typical 50-litre fuel tank than a year ago, the organisation said.

For individual car owners, the average monthly cost of petrol is £18.41 higher than last year.
