The parents of a special forces soldier who fell to his death when his parachute malfunctioned have seen a video recording of the incident at the inquest into his death.

Captain Daniel Wright, 25, of the Queen's Gurkha Signal Corps, died after taking off from RAF Brize Norton in West Oxfordshire and then plummeting 2,500ft over Weston-on-the-Green on November 17, 2005.

It was his first day training with the SAS.

At the inquest into his death, which opened at Oxford Coroner's Court today, Capt Wright's parents Irwin and Carol watched a recording of his jump played on a television screen.

The footage, which was filmed from the ground, showed Capt Wright as the second of three to jump from the aircraft but, while the other two parachutes successfully deployed, he began spiralling towards the ground.

Voices of instructors on the ground could be heard saying "Cut it away" and "Get off it, get off it" as the chute span out of control.

A fellow soldier, referred to as Witness C, told the inquest he was waiting to go up for another jump as he watched Capt Wright's descent. He said: "He began to circle faster and faster and everybody was shouting at him to pull his reserve and from a height of approximately 200ft he did pull it and then seemed to accelerate quicker and disappeared into a tree line."

The inquest continues.
