Police seized drugs and a taser gun in a series of raids across rural Oxfordshire to mark the end of a two-month crackdown on major crime.

The raids started when officers burst through the door at a semi-detached house in Springfield Road, Wantage, at about 7.20am today.

Ten minutes later officers raided a second floor flat in Ashdown Way, Grove, and seized drugs from inside.

Then, in the afternoon shortly before 5pm, police raided a third house, in Farm Close Road, Wheatley.

Inside they found a stash of class A drugs, cannabis and an illegal police taser gun.

The three raids took place on the final day of Operation Maelstrom, targeting major criminals and drug dealing in South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse.

A trained drugs police sniffer dog was used in the searches of the homes.

Pc Liam Busby, of Wantage Police, said: "We are really pleased with the warrants.

"This is all part of Operation Maelstrom, which has been a successful operation with more than 20 warrants executed in just two months.

"We are determined to make sure that drug dealers are brought to court and face justice.

"I hope the public has appreciated seeing police officers in high visibility roles. Although the operation has finished we will continue to execute warrants and this is not the end."

Police seized bags of suspected cannabis and amphetamines from the flat in Grove.

The suspected drugs have been taken away for tests to find discover what type they are.

A 24-year-old man was led away in handcuffs by officers after being arrested on suspicion of possession of class B and class C drugs with intent to supply.

A resident of Ashdown Way, who did not want to be named, said: "It was really scary we had just woken up and heard smashing glass and the walls shake.

"There has been a problem here and it's not just the drugs.

"There are many people coming and going and lots of noise - it's been a nightmare."

In Wheatley, police searched the house and found suspected drugs, which will be taken for tests, and an illegal taser.

Two men, aged 24 and 25, were arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A and C drugs and possession of a prohibited firearm. They were in custody this evening being quizzed by officers.

No drugs were found and no arrests were made at the Wantage address.

Officers said there no links between the three raids.

Police have made more than 90 arrests for crimes including drug dealing, burglary and car crime since the operation began.

Drugs raids also took place in Didcot, Dorchester, Berinsfield, Benson and Brightwell-cum-Sotwell.
