Sir - It is apparent from Craig Simmons' remarks about the incinerator (Report, February 15), just as much as from his remarks in the past about successful cafés, that he doesn't like the idea of companies making a profit.

This is entirely in line with the left-wing stance of the Green Party, although it is a concept which the Labour Party has come to live with. In the real world, this is how things work. The companies which make low-energy lightbulbs would not do so if they were not profitable, and they can't be hand-crafted on vegetarian communes in Wales instead. You can be sure that the enterprises which provide Mr Simmons' followers with solar panels are making a profit too. The Green Party has done sterling work in the past by alerting the rest of us to environmental issues, but it is only through mainstream business, politics, and technology that adequate large-scale solutions can be implemented.
