Sir - Why does Jan Penrose (Letters, February 15) think it "grossly insulting to describe the Muslim call to prayer as un-English"? I would have thought it just an obvious fact! Does he/she think everything foreign is inferior? Is the phrase 'un-English', therefore, an insult? What a petty, nationalistic point of view!
I was brought up in Egypt, and so well-used to calls to prayer. There was also, in Cairo, an impressive 1930s-style Anglican cathedral - long since demolished - which may have rung its bells on Sundays. If some local residents called the bells 'un-Egyptian' they would just have been stating a fact.
