A GROUP of quilters has come second place in a quilting competition with its Ukrainian sunflower design.

The Oxfordshire Modern Quilt Guild (OMQG), based in Didcot, is now raffling off the second-place creation to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee for Ukraine.

The group decided to create a Ukrainian-themed quilt to help those affected by the ongoing conflict.

It is made up of a yellow and blue colour scheme to reflect the colours of the Ukrainian flag and a star theme to represent hope for the future.

Individual guild members contributed blocks and these were joined together and quilted with a Ukrainian sunflower design to make a truly beautiful and unique bed-sized quilt, measuring approximately 2 metres square.

It was then entered into last week's Festival of Quilts, the UK’s largest quilt show, where the judges said it was “a bright and beautiful quilt, a joy to see” and “a beautiful quilting design which adds a super layer to this work".

All materials for the quilt were provided by individual members of the OMQG. The backing fabric was donated by Saira Puffett, of Olive and Flo Handcraft, and the wadding was donated by Helen Steele.
