Oxford played host to a top-level gathering of Liberal Democrats at the weekend - as part of moves to increase the party's political gains in the city.

The party held its regional conference at Oxford Brookes University - with many of the party's 'big-hitters' giving speeches.

Former leadership contender and current shadow home secretary, Chris Huhne, and shadow chancellor, Dr Vince Cable, were among MPs speaking at the Headington Hill campus.

Oxford was chosen as the party hopes to win both the city's seats at the next General Election.

Among the 150 delegates from Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hampshire were Oxford West and Abingdon MP Dr Evan Harris, and prospective parliamentary candidate for Oxford East Steve Goddard.

In 2005 Labour MP Andrew Smith won a 963 vote majority over Mr Goddard.
