u3a members can see a special quilt celebrating the movement's 40th Anniversary at its new temporary home at the Witney Blanket Hall.

Forty blocks make up the quilt, all made by u3a members and groups, as part of a national competition.

The best quilted squares were selected by Stewart Hillard, from TV’s Great British Sewing Bee, and of the 40 selected from all over the country, three were made by Witney u3a members.

Oxford Mail:

The quilt was first revealed in Manchester earlier this year, after a countdown on social media revealing each winning quilt block.

The historic Witney Blanket Hall will host the quilt for a year, where u3a members and groups can visit it and see it face-to-face.

The Witney branch unveiled the piece in front of an audience of u3a representatives including Sam Mauger, CEO Third Age Trust, Michaela Moody, Vice Chair of the Third Age Trust, and representatives from local u3as as well as four honorary Witney members, some of whom were founder members in 1985.

Jane Clarke and Ann Francis who created the winning Witney entries, gave a talk on their inspiration. A cake with an image of the quilt was cut by Susie Berry, Trustee of the u3a South East Region.

Oxford Mail:

Richard Martin of the Blanket Hall also gave a talk of the history of blanket making in Witney and the refurbishment of the Blanket Hall building.

The u3a is open to anyone not in full-time employment who is looking to make new friends or take up a new or existing hobby. The Witney u3a group has over 60 groups from art to yoga.

The Blanket Hall is open Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. For more details about the u3a email: infowitneyu3a@gmail.com or call 07732 597087.
