A BONFIRE in Oxford spread and destroyed five outbuildings last night (13).

Five fire engines from Rewley Road, Slade, Watlington and Abingdon were called to Littlemore at about 9.50pm.

The spreading fire involved several sheds, hedges and trees across the rear gardens of six properties.

The firefighters were able to bring the fire under control before it could spread to nearby houses.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire was caused by a small bonfire going out of control and spreading to the hedges and trees nearby.

“We would like to remind everyone that in the exceptionally dry and hot conditions even a small bonfire can spread from a stray ember or dry vegetation very quickly.

“The [team] has had a number of fires spreading from bonfires over the last week and would urge the public to think about the dangers of having bonfires at this time no matter how small.”
