A MAN was arrested following a crash on the M40 in Oxfordshire in which two people were injured.

Thames Valley Police said that at around 3.25am yesterday (August 10) a grey Hyundai I 30, a yellow recovery truck and a Volvo lorry collided on the M40 between J10 and J11 northbound, from Bicester towards Banbury.

A fourth vehicle, a grey Ford transit van, also collided with the grey Hyundai I30 a few moments later.

A man in his fifties suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

A man in his thirties was also taken to hospital with minor injuries where he remains. The police confirmed no other people were injured in the crash.

The Hyundai driver, a 33-year-old man from Warwickshire, has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing serious injury.

The police are now appealing for witnesses following the incident.

Investigating officer, Sergeant Joe Clamp, of the joint operations roads policing unit based at Bicester, said: “We are investigating the circumstances of this collision on the M40 yesterday. We are requesting the public’s help and would ask anyone who has not yet come forward as a witness to do so.

“We are also looking for anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the incident or the moments leading up to the incident to please check their footage and upload it.

“Anyone with other information should call 101 quoting reference 43220355461.”

The incident led to the M40 being closed for hours due to recovery and investigation following the incident, which left oil on the road.

Police, fire and rescue and four ambulances were sent out after a number of 999 calls were made at around 3.40am.

Road closures were put in place when a secondary collision occurred on the southbound carriageway.

On the opposite carriageway, two lorries jack-knifed, with one HGV driver sustaining abdominal injuries.

A South Central Ambulance spokesperson said: “We received a number of 999 calls around 03:40 this morning allreporting a serious accident on the M40 northbound between junctions 10 and 11 involving a car, van and HGV.

“At the same location, two lorries on the opposite carriageway had jackknifed. On the northbound carriageway, our teams treated three patients; one with potentially serious injuries and the other two with minor injuries. All three were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for further treatment."

Traffic queues built up to past Junction 9 for Bicester and Oxford, and caused further congestion along diverted routes.

National Highways later tweeted warnings to drivers of a large fuel spillage and a “substantial amount of debris” on the road.

A diversion was put in place during accident investigation work. The road remained closed until around 2pm for emergency resurfacing due to the substantial fuel spill.
