A HOMELESSNESS charity has warned about the dangers of extreme weather for rough sleeps as a heatwave is set to hit Oxfordshire this week.

St Mungo’s, a leading charity which aims to end homelessness and rebuild lives, is working with Oxford City Council to activate the ‘Severe Weather Emergency Protocol’ (SWEP) from today (10) until Sunday (14).

The protocol enables the Oxford Street Population Outreach Team (OxSPOT), operated by St Mungo’s, to carry out additional shifts, giving out water and sun protection, as well as additional day shelter being made available for people experiencing homelessness.

These measures come as parts of the UK are issued with the second extreme heat warning this year from the Met Office with temperatures expected to reach highs of 33°C.

Matt Rudd, St Mungo’s regional head, said: “As we enter another period of extreme heat it is essential that people are aware of the dangers of heat and sun exposure, and the particular risks that this poses to people experiencing homelessness.

“We really would urge the public to take action if they see somebody sleeping rough during this period.

“It’s as easy offering somebody water and sun cream and making a referral through the StreetLink app so that a specialist team can reach them to offer further support.
