THERE were five more coronavirus deaths recorded in Oxford over the last week.

A total of 217 people had died in the area when the UK coronavirus dashboard was updated on Wednesday (August 3) – up from 212 a week before.

They were among 23,883 deaths recorded across the South East.

The figures include anyone who died within 28 days of a positive test result for covid, and whose usual residence was in Oxford.

A total of 161,560 deaths were recorded throughout England by Wednesday – up from 160,485 last week.

Meanwhile, Oxford University Hospitals Trust, which runs the John Radcliffe and the Churchill hospitals in Oxford, and the Horton General Hospital in Banbury, was caring for 143 coronavirus patients in hospital as of Tuesday. 

NHS England data shows the number of people being treated in hospital for covid by 8am on July 26 was down from 190 on the same day the previous week.

The number of beds at the trust occupied by people who tested positive for covid increased by 61 per cent in the last four weeks – 28 days ago, there were 89.

Across England there were 12,113 people in hospital with covid as of July 26, with 290 of them in mechanical ventilation beds.

The number of Covid-19 patients hospitalised nationally has increased by 49 per cent in the last four weeks, while the number on mechanical ventilators has increased by 41 per cent.

The figures also show that 131 new covid patients were admitted to hospital at the trust, in the week to July 24. This was down from 166 in the previous seven days.

The number of covid cases in Oxfordshire has also gone down in the past week.

The total went from 1,243 to 774 in one week, a decrease of 37.7 per cent, putting the infection rate at 111.1 per 100,000 of the population.

In Oxford, the number of cases also went down from 301 to 157 in one week – a 42.1 per cent decrease, putting the infection rate at 103.6.

The highest number of cases was reported in Cowley North, where 15 people tested positive.

  • West Oxfordshire, 140
  • South Oxfordshire, 147
  • Cherwell, 161
