A long-time alcoholic who pawed a female constable’s bottom was given a chance to kick his decades-long booze addiction for good.

Kelvin Green told Judge Ian Pringle QC that he had ‘seen the light’ as he was given an 18 month community order with a requirement to address his alcohol addiction.

The 46-year-old, of Bullstake Close, Oxford, was said by prosecutors to have ‘grabbed’ the officer from behind in the city on September 10 last year. William Saunders, for the Crown, said: “He grabbed hold of her backside with both hands – on each buttock.”

The defendant, however, claimed that he had ‘slapped’ it. Although he admitted sexual assault, he denied that the incident was sexually-motivated and was instead the result of ‘poor thinking skills and an alcohol problem’.

That issue with alcohol dated back to the death of his father in 1991, Oxford Crown Court.

Green gave up drugs following the tragic death of his brother in a car accident in the late 1990s, but had been unable to give up his addiction to alcohol. He was said to have consumed between eight and 12 cans of cider daily at times.

Since being remanded in custody in June, he had dried out and was committed to addressing the long-standing issue.

Imposing the community order with a nine-month alcohol treatment requirement and 25 probation sessions, Judge Pringle urged Green to ‘get a grip’ on his alcoholism.
