Detectives have been given an extra 12 hours to quiz a suspect arrested on an attempted murder charge in the wake of the Cowley Road shooting.

District Judge Kamlesh Rana approved an application by Thames Valley Police for an extension of detention warrant. The hearing took place behind closed doors.

By law, police usually have to charge or release a suspect within 24 hours of their arrest. That can be extended to up to 36 hours by an officer of at least the rank of superintendent.

The police must the apply to the magistrates' court if they want to hold the arrested individual for longer.

Police were called to Cowley Road at 6.45pm on Sunday. A man had reportedly been shot in the shoulder, receiving minor injuries. 

By yesterday morning, two men had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

The police have not confirmed whether or not the firearm has been recovered.
