A public inquiry is to be held after retail giant Aldi lodged an appeal against a decision to refuse it planning permission for a new supermarket on an Oxford flood plain.

The German retail chain has appealed to the Secretary of State after Oxford City Council turned down its application for a 1,731 square metre supermarket on land to the west of Toys R Us, in Botley Road.

Planning permission was refused in May last year on the grounds that the site is in an Environment Agency recognised flood zone and fears that the development would generate excessive amounts of traffic on the heavily congested Botley Road.

The planning inquiry is set to take place on Thursday, April 10.
