Make the most of the sunshine while it lasts by visiting some Oxford pubs with gardens and outdoor spaces.

A good place to start is The Victoria Arms in Old Marston as it has lots of space and seating outside.

Situated on the banks of the River Cherwell, the riverside pub and restaurant has mooring available for punts on the River Cherwell.

The building dates back to the 17th century as the ferryman’s cottage and, according to legend, once hosted Oliver Cromwell.

The pub in Mill Lane is run by Butcombe Brewing Company.

Its website says: “The Victoria offers traditional pub charm with beautiful interiors, a heated pergola terrace, and huge beer gardens overlooking the river.

“In the kitchen, our focus is hearty seasonal dishes and elevated pub classics, with local produce and ingredients at the heart of the menu.

The Fishes in North Hinksey village is another pub with plenty of outdoor space - and is much loved by foodies who often choose to eat outdoors when the sun is out.”

Its website says: “The Fishes is a hidden gem. Quite a big gem, too.

“An imposing Victorian building set in acres of wooded grounds leading down to the banks of Seacourt Stream.

“The deck that wraps around the conservatory offers a rare opportunity in land-locked Oxford to dine outside with an idyllic view.”

Tap Social Movement’s pub is just a short distance away on the Curtis industrial estate is not as picturesque but it does have some tables outside.

In Oxford itself, there are tables outside at the Turf Tavern in Bath Place.

It has a paved garden with plenty of seating and is a good spot for catching some rays.

This historic pub is popular with students and has welcomed some famous faces over years, including former US president Bill Clinton and Bob Hawke, who served as Australian Prime Minister.

There are also outdoor tables at the Rose & Crown in North Parade Avenue.

In Headington Quarry the Masons Arms has a large garden. There is also a heated decking area.

The pub offers a wide range of beers including its very own Old Bog beers, a selection of Belgian bottled beers, and a range of draught beers and ciders. It’s a focal point locally with many pub teams including darts, Aunt Sally and bar billiards.

The Masons Arms was Oxford CAMRA’s Pub of the Year in 2004, 2005, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2019.
