Thames Valley Police Authority has increased its share of the council tax bill by four per cent for the coming year.

The increase means the authority now charges £144.76 to the average band D council tax payer, up from £139.19 last year.

The authority says the precept increase will enable it to recruit an extra 21 police officers, taking its total to 4,160 by March 2009 and an extra four police staff.

Oxfordshire County Council on Tuesday approved a 3.8 per cent rise in its share of this year's council tax bill.

The increase means an extra £40 a year for an average band D household in the county, taking their bill from £1,049 to £1,089 a year.

And on Monday evening Oxford City Council expects to make a decision on its share of the final bill.
