The Meningitis Trust is the UK's longest established meningitis charity, and Jo Kennedy, the new Community Development Officer for the trust, is encouraging people from all walks of life across Oxfordshire to be part of the charity's 21st anniversary year.

Meningitis is an infectious disease that can strike in an instant and kill within hours. It can leave sufferers with severe after-effects including brain damage, deafness, and, where septicaemia (blood poisoning) has occurred, even loss of limbs.

The trust is dedicated to providing lifelong practical, emotional and financial support to those whose lives have been shattered by the disease.

Jo Kennedy said: "I'm here to help out with anything from providing fundraising materials, to offering moral support. It's great fun for a great cause, so come and join in. Your efforts will help in providing after-care and support, and will include providing vital equipment for people like little Edward (pictured).

"As the trust relies on voluntary contributions to fund its work, volunteers and supporters are the lifeblood of the trust. By either taking part in an event, organising your own, or simply volunteering, it all makes a vital difference to those living with meningitis.

"There are many ways people can get involved. If you are a student, you could organise a bucket collection or a sponsored spud-run' round the pubs in your area. You'll be given signs and symptoms cards, which help tell people about meningitis and the work the trust does."

The trust's support services include a 24-hour helpline, free confidential counselling, a home visiting service and grants to fund training, equipment, activities and respite care. March is the charity's annual Coffee Break Month. You could organise one at home with your friends, or at work. Those who raise over £200 can enter in a lucky draw to win the adventure of a lifetime - a first-class holiday around the world for two.

"Or take part in your own challenge of a lifetime by undertaking an overseas trek, or running a marathon," said Jo. "For those with children, join our April Toddle Waddle for the under-fives - waddle in your local park, playground or nursery grounds or even dress up as our mascot, Monty the Duck."

Joe Hyde, a volunteer, said: "I've volunteered a few times with their street collections. I really enjoy it. The trust has always made me feel welcome and is very appreciative and thankful of the time I put in. Everything is always very well arranged, and I'm looking forward to the next time I can lend a hand."
