Sir - Yesterday I had cause to use Oxford Railway Station. There was not a single seat in the concourse.

There was, however, a notice indicating that pregnant women (who could provide the appropriate documentation) would be allowed a seat on a train.

Major refurbishment can never justify the total absence of seating provision in a public space such as this. It does, however, give an insight into the corporate attitude. 'Customers are an inconvenience and should be discouraged at all costs. Let them drive cars!' Which begs the question: If they want to discourage customers and close the station, why spend so much money on 'refurbishment'?
