A workman's Second World War ammunition find sparked the evacuation of 50 homes today.
People were asked to leave their homes and offices in Cholswell Road, at Dalton Barracks, Abingdon, at about 11.30am, after a workman, digging at the new TA centre building site, made the find.
A 300-metre cordon was set up around the site while an explosives expert was called in to examine six or seven shells.
When the alarm was first raised, rumours were rife that there was an unexploded bomb on site.
However, it was decided there was little risk of the shells exploding and people were allowed back four hours later.
A cordon within the barracks remains until the shells are disposed of.
Anna Matthews, 22, who works nearby, praised the evacuation. She said: "It was done quite well. We were just told to leave the building and make our own way out."
