A cricket club's plans for a new pavilion have been delayed, because contractors could not meet the cost target.

Charlbury Cricket Club, whose ground was swamped in last July's floods, will now have to wait another year before a replacement pavilion can be built.

Spokesman Malcolm Harper said: "It's a blow and we have had to make rearrangements for this season.

"We will have to make the existing pavilion usable for changing, toilets, hopefully showers and a reduced bar facility. The kitchen will not be available."

Flood water from the nearby River Evenlode came up to the building's roof. A working party, along with contractors, will now make it fit for use this summer.

But the club is still determined to build a new pavilion on higher ground, because of fears of a repeat of the flooding.

The club, which has three teams playing in the Oxfordshire Cricket Association, invited tenders but the only contractor who could meet the timescale asked for £410,000, far more than the £250,000 the club has to spend.

It will now revise its plans and invite new tenders for the work.
