A man was attacked by a gang of teenagers on a bus between Carterton and Witney on Saturday.

When he got off the bus, some more teenagers then stamped on his head.

Police said he spent Friday evening in Witney before catching the No. 100 bus at about 1.30am.

During the journey he was assaulted by a group of five to six teenagers, aged between 15 and 16.

At about 2am he got off the bus where he was then attacked by two youths in Brize Norton Road, at the junction of Alvescot Road and Burford Road, outside the old Aviator pub.

Pc Andy Ball, of Witney police station, said: "This was witnessed by a passing taxi driver who saw the youths stamping on the man's head and legs.

"A passenger in the taxi got out of the car and chased the offenders through the town centre.

"However, he lost sight of them and, despite a thorough search by police, the offenders were not located.

"This was a brutal and completely unprovoked attack on a man making his way home from a night out with friends. He was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital with a broken leg and facial injuries where he remains.

"I appeal to anyone who was on this bus in the early hours of Saturday morning and witnessed the initial assault to contact police immediately."

One of the youths was about 5ft 6in tall, of medium build and had mousy brown hair. He wore a green-and-white hooded top Anyone with information should call police 08458 505505 or speak anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
