It was a protest against ‘The Cuts’ - the two words the country adopted to describe the economies imposed on us by politicians.
Four members of Rose Hill youth club in Oxford were angry in 1977 at plans to reduce spending on youth services and toured other clubs to collect 100 signatures for a petition.

The four girls, Charlene Kennedy, 15, and her friends, Diane and Gina Walls and Deloris Thomas, toured other youth clubs to gain support. Janet Adams, 15, is pictured adding her name.
The girls claimed that if clubs had to shut down, youngsters would have nothing to do in the evenings – and this could lead to vandalism.

Charlene said: “We think it is unfair to sack part-time youth leaders and then expect them to come back after the summer.”
