The Court of Appeal will today consider whether a £120,000 fine for fire safety breaches at an Abingdon takeaway was excessive.

DUB Catering Ltd was given the huge fine at Oxford Crown Court by Judge Michael Gledhill QC last year for breaking the rules at Sami’s Barbeque and Pizza Takeaway in Ock Street.

An inspection in 2019 found that sprinkler heads had been removed, flammable liquids like cooking oil were being stored in first floor rooms and there were no fire doors on the main escape route for staff.

Judge Gledhill told director Mustafa Dumanli, who was given a suspended sentence, last summer: “The consequences could have been appalling.”

Lawyers for DUB Catering Ltd, the company responsible for the takeaway, are due before the Royal Courts of Justice this morning to appeal the £120,000 fine.
