A STUDENT kitchen caught fire last night (15) when cooking utensils were left on the stove.

Two fire appliances from Rewley Road Fire Station were called to the Oxford City Centre accommodation at about 6.20pm.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and used a high-pressure hose reel and Co2 extinguisher to extinguish the fire.

A statement released by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “The fire is believed to have started when cooking utensils were left on a hot part of the cooker which then ignited.

“Due to swift actions of fire crews minimum damage was done to the kitchen. Specialist fans were used to clear smoke from the building.”

Incident commander Jason Clifford has now urged students to take care when cooking and not leave cooking unattended.
