A popular riverside pub reopens tomorrow [Thursday] after a six-figure refurbishment.

The Rose Revived at Newbridge, near Witney, which is now part of the Chef & Brewer group, has undergone a complete renovation designed to enhance its historic site.

The pub got its unusual name because during the 1644 English Civil War Oliver Cromwell once ordered an extra tankard of ale to put a drooping rose in to. The rose was soon revived and hence the name.

Oxford Mail:

The Battle of Newbridge was fought on the banks of the river when parliamentarian William Waller attempted to cross in order to surround Oxford and capture King Charles, but was defeated.

With a revamped decor and an extension to its three large patios, the dog friendly pub which is popular with walkers along the Thames, can now welcome over 300 customers.

Inside, the bar area has been totally reconfigured and as well as a variety of real cask ales, the pub will stock ale from local breweries.

It has a new menu and a weekly specials board and will offer the pub’s first-ever brunch menu, as well as its traditional Sunday roasts.

The bedrooms have also been modernised and given updated private bathrooms.

General manager Craig Rose said: “We’re so pleased to finally be reopening our doors and welcoming our locals back following the refurbishment.

"The pub has been on such a huge journey over the last three and a half years and I’m especially excited about launching the new food offering, which is proper pub food with a gastro twist.

“With such a historic pub, it’s important that despite the refurb and upgraded offering, guests know that we’re still the same classic local pub.

"It doesn’t matter if you want a quick drink in the sunshine, or a fantastic meal in the evening – we’ve got something for everyone.”
