Firefighters were called to two houses in Oxfordshire after blazes were caused by faulty batteries and a ‘carelessly discarded’ cigarette.

Fire crews from Witney Fire Station attended both incidents during the weekend.

The first incident, on Friday, saw crews called to reports of a kitchen fire in the village of Hailey at around 5.33pm.

While of the scene the firefighters faced smoke in the property and had to wear specialist breathing apparatus. A crew was sent into the house with a hose reel to extinguish the source of the blasé: faulty batteries on charge.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue said: “The quick thinking of the occupiers and speedy response of crews helped keep damage to a minimum.”

The second incident took place on Saturday morning at 2.25am when firefighters were called to a rear garden fire at a property in Smiths Estate, Witney.

The fire service said the cause of the fire was due to ‘a carelessly discarded cigarette’.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue said: “The occupiers in this incident were alerted by the dog barking and smoke detectors actuating in the home.”

“Both occasions smoke detectors were present and activated.

“Watch manager Rowe would like to remind everyone of the importance in having them tested regularly and in good condition,” the spokesperson added.
