A SENIOR Oxford councillor has revealed he has been longlisted as a Labour candidate to become an MP.

Tom Hayes was Oxford City Council’s deputy leader, and cabinet member for green transport and zero carbon Oxford, until earlier this month when he announced he would be running as a Labour candidate.

Mr Hayes, who is from Salford, is seeking to become MP for Stretford and Urmston – a Greater Manchester seat.

Current incumbent Kate Green has been MP since May 2010, but is set to stand down at the next election.

On May 15, Mr Hayes announced he would be in the race to be the Labour candidate.

In a video posted on Twitter, Mr Hayes said: “I was born and brought up in Salford in the values of our Labour movement – fairness, equality and solidarity.

“I live those values every day as a Labour councillor and a mental health and domestic abuse charity chief executive.

“I want to bring my knowledge and my experience, and represent you in parliament so that we can fight the cost of living crisis, so that we can restore our public services and so that we can bring the Green New Deal to the green benches.”
