These darts players probably didn’t look quite as bright and cheerful at the end of their 24-hour marathon.
They were preparing to stand in front of the dartboard all day and night at the Kings Arms pub in Kidlington in 1987 to raise money for the Oxford and District Children’s Heart Circle.

A similar marathon the previous year had raised £1,555 for the same charity. Both events were in memory of an 18-year-old motorcyclist who died in a crash.

One of the players, local government officer John Coggins, of Evans Lane, Kidlington, said: “The landlord is putting up £5 for every 180 scored and we will be having a barbecue and raffle in the evening.”
The landlord’s five-year-old son, Liam Giles, got the marathon under way by throwing the first dart.
