It was described as the biggest street party in Oxfordshire - and it certainly looked like it, with hardly an inch of space to spare.

With brightly-coloured streamers across the road, families in Jericho, Oxford, turned out in force to mark the Queen’s 25 years on the throne in 1977.

Street parties were held throughout the county and the country on this special occasion, with no-one realising that there would be 70th anniversary celebrations this year, 45 years later.

Jubilee day 1977 was a day for children - everywhere, tables were set up in streets, parks and gardens and loaded with food and drink, and youngsters took part in fancy dress, sports and games.

The Lord Mayor of Oxford, Dora Carr, popped in to cut the jubilee cake in Bulan Road, Headington, while youngsters from Canning Crescent, New Hinksey, paraded around Rivermead Hospital in fancy dress to entertain patients.

A bonnet competition was one special feature of a party for youngsters in The Moors, Kidlington.

Other Jubilee frolics included a sausage eating contest at the George pub in Botley Road, Oxford.

Even rain and wind failed to dampen the enthusiasm of thousands who attended Oxford Rotary Club’s ‘Orjee’ celebration at South Park, Headington, featuring a parade of floats, a host of attractions and a spectacular firework display and bonfire.
