A man who attacked his partner after a laughing gas binge has been sent to prison.

George Morgan, formerly of Villa Close, Cholsey, was spared an immediate custodial sentence by Recorder John Hardy QC earlier this year after he admitted assaulting the woman in her Henley flat.

The judge told him that anyone who hit women deserved to go to prison, but acknowledged the 33-year-old had already spent more than six months behind bars on remand. He imposed a 12 month suspended prison sentence.

He was back in the dock at Oxford Crown Court on Thursday after failing to provide the probation service with evidence about why he had skipped appointments.

His barrister, Kellie Enever, said her client had been ill but accepted he had not been in touch with the probation service within the required timeframe to give proof of why he was absent.

Judge Michael Gledhill QC followed the recommendation of the probation service and activated the 12 month sentence in full.

He told the defendant: “I am not going to lecture you, George Morgan, about the breach. You know exactly what I would say if I were to comment on your lamentable failures to comply with the order.”

The 37 weeks Morgan served on remand will count towards the sentence he has to serve, meaning it is likely he will be released from custody almost immediately to spend the remainder of his sentence on licence.
