Five months later, on April 18, he was caught in Bonn Square with a wooden-handled knife. On the same date he stole a pouch of tobacco from a newsagent in the square.

Appearing before Oxford Crown Court on Wednesday morning, Southwell, of Luther Street, Oxford, pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a bladed article and a charge of shoplifting.

Alice Aubrey-Fletcher, defending, said her client had suffered a brain injury in the last year. She asked the judge to order a pre-sentence report.

Judge Michael Gledhill QC ordered that probation report and adjourned sentencing to June 22.
