Witney MP Robert Courts hosted a Dementia Friends training session at an Older Persons Fair in Witney.

The event at the Corn Exchange was organised by Home Instead Oxford and supported by Mr Courts to mark Dementia Awareness Week.

Many local charities and organisations attended offering information and resources to older members of the community.

Mr Courts was introduced by Home Instead managing director John Kirk.

He shared what he had learned through becoming a trainer with the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme, which is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia.

Residents enthusiastically took part in an exercise to think about the steps needed to make a nice cup of tea to illustrate how everyday tasks are much more complex than we realise.

Mr Courts also used the analogy of fairy lights analogy to explain how dementia can affect many functions of the brain, including movement, vision and coordination.

Oxford Mail:

Home Instead tweeted: "We had an absolutely fantastic day at our Older Person's Day at the Corn Exchange Witney this morning. It was a great day filled with lots of information from our stall holders of local organisations here to support you as you age."

Mr Courts said there was a great turnout of local residents.

He said: "I was pleased to help more people in our area to understand how they can support those living with dementia."
