Customers have shared their fond memories of a city centre newsagent, as the business is set to close after decades of trade.

Tim’s Newsagent and Off Licence, located on High Street, will close its doors in September.

Owner Tim Gresswell has said he is  ‘devastated’ to shut the shop, which he has run since 1989.

Philip Wootton, of Dale Close, said he was “sad” to hear the news of the closure.

He said: “At the beginning of lockdown I rang Tim to ask if he could deliver just the Weekend FT. He said he would as he delivered next door.

“Come rain and shine, thereafter, it was on my doormat early Saturday morning. Occasionally I would see him struggle to my door at 5am. As you know he is in his late 60’s!

“Two weeks ago there was no colour supplement. I rang him and he told me that there had been a transport hitch, but if he could find one he would get it to me. Sure enough on Sunday morning there was my colour supplement.

What a man!  What a wonderful business!”

Amir Steve Ali, who had an interview at the shop a few years ago, called Mr Gresswell a “really nice person”.

Another customer, Saeed Riasat, also said the news was ‘sad’.

“Such a nice man,” he commented.
