An activist who launched two legal challenges against the Government – and won -will speak at a church in Oxford this week.

In 2016, Gina Miller initiated a court case against the Government over its right to tigger Article 50 without approval from Parliament. She won the case and the Supreme Court ruled in favour of giving MPs a say over implementing Brexit.

This was followed by a second, successful legal challenge in 2019 in regards to the Government's prorogation of Parliament.

Mrs Miller will speak at St Barnabas Church in Cardigan Street, Jericho on Thursday.

Oxford Mail:

The 57-year old activist will discuss the True and Fair Party, which she founded, and how political “corruption” throughout the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a ‘them and us’ mentality between politicians and the public.

She explained: “It is time to modernise the system and clean up politics. Basically, in no other walk of life would we be able to get away with what they have got away with. We all know that.

“So how do you start fixing that?

“We are talking about the True and Fair Party, the policies and touch on the court cases of the past but also where we are on Northern Ireland Brexit as well.”

The True and Fair Party, which Mrs Miller officially launched in January this year, is a new political party that aims to restore trust and confidence in national institutions and public life.

“The main aim is to ‘clean up politics’, the idea that there are very few checks and balances, an MP can lie, they can lobby the Government, give money to their friends and family and yet there are no rules they are breaking because there are no rules.

“The ministerial code is talked about, the Nolan Principles are talked about but none of them are legislation. There are no checks and balances for MPs. It is quite extraordinary,” She said.

Mrs Miller’s talk is part of a wider tour of events across the UK.

She feels Oxford is an important place to visit and discuss ideas about the future of politics because there is so much “innovation” and “looking to the future” happening in the city.

She summarised: “We have got to get better people in politics. If we clean up the system, create more trust and more diversity – not just physical diversity but neurodiversity – my view is we will get better politics and better politicians.”

Gina Miller will speak at St Barnabas Church in Cardigan Street, Jericho on Thursday (May 19) at 6.30pm.

The event is a £5 per person donation which will be donated to the St Barnabas Clock Fund.
