Commuters are being warned to take alternative routes when a busy road into Oxford is closed by roadworks.

A section of Oxford Road between the Talbot Inn and the Swinford Toll Bridge in Eynsham will be closed from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Thursday May 19 while work is carried out by Scottish and Southern Power Distribution.

The road will also be closed on June 1 from 9.30am to 4pm for the same reasons.

A mysterious road sign suggesting Oxford Road in Eynsham would be closed for a week seems to have disappeared.

Toll collectors on Swinford Bridge handed out slips with the telephone number of the council's highways department to drivers, advising them to contact the council for more information.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire County Council confirmed the two closures and and advised people to check at https://one.network/uk/oxfordshire which is on the council's website and available for the public to use.

He said: "It’s important to stress that these are two separate closures for a few hours each. We believe there may be some misleading information being circulated claiming that the road will be closed from 19 May until 1 June. This is not the case."

The council advised motorists to take the suggested alternative route on these days: via B4044 Eynsham Road, A420, A34 Western By-Pass Road, A44 Woodstock Road, A40 Northern By-pass, A40 Eynsham Road, B4449, B4044 Oxford Road and vice versa.
